Data Cleaning & Analysis — Air Crash

By Wenjing Ding

Every year, the world sees an alarmingly large amount of plane crashes. It is maybe the only mode of transportation that is considered the safest but also one where, if things go wrong, it can be catastrophic. March 21, 2022. A Boeing 737 plane of China Eastern Airlines carrying 123 passengers and 9 crew from Kunming to Guangzhou crashed in South China’s Guangxi province. Killing all 132 people on board.

USA Total Airplane Fatality 2010-2020

This article will clean and analyze the data of China and Russia plane crashes.

Copy of List of Countries by Airline Passengers in 2019

This is the net chart I wanted to highlight. This shows the number of passengers that used air travel in the year of 2019. The U.S. comes in first followed by China and Russia is all the way down in 8th place. While the U.S. transports almost a billion passengers, Russia 115 million seems pale in comparison.

Countries and regions with the highest number of fatal civil airliner accidents from 1945 -2022

I wanted to showcase a chart from 1945-2022 to give historical perspective. Passenger numbers have obviously been increasing which leads to more fatalities, but the fatalities and passenger numbers for Russia seems to be a troubling number.

As far as we know, Russia has one of the worst aviation safety records in the world. A 2018 report by the Interstate Aviation Committee, a group that oversees air safety standards in countries that make up the former Soviet Union, found that 42 of the region’s 58 aviation accidents that year took place in Russia and led to the deaths of 128 people.

How many incidents has Russia seen in the last 10 years

It is because of that fact that I found this chart to be really interesting. It makes sense that the U.S. would be leading the charge when it comes to aircraft crash fatalities because of the sheer volume of people they transport yearly. But Russia comes in second place while virtually transporting a fraction of the number.

Airplane Fatality Around the World

The next chart we made shows airplane fatalities around the world, with the darker color being countries with worse fatality numbers. While we have a similar chart above, this one puts the numbers into perspective. The U.S. seems to have the highest number followed by Russia and China is relatively safe.
